Apple In Your Eyes Episode 13 (The End) Recap

2:23 PM Posted by ninja , , 30 comments
Question of the hour: Seriously?!

Yao Qi finds Mama Zhou at home busily trying to arrange his and Ji Wei's wedding. With a somber expression, Yao Wi asks Mama Zhou "Can you give me two more years?"
Ji Wei's coworkers talks her into trying some wedding dress on since it would be their wedding gift to them.

Mei Xiu finds a secret love note to her.
Sitting on their secret wall, Yao Qi looks at the imaginary little Ji Wei and tells her "I am sorry, this world is too big. Not everything can be what we want it to be."

Completely unaware of Yao Qi's struggles, Ji Wei looks in the mirror "I am so happy right now."
Yao Qi tells Mama Zhou the whole truth about the $900,000 NT debt ($300,000 U.S) he has decided to repay for his dad. Mama Zhou screams and yells at Yao Qi to be more selfish and not take Ji Wei into a life of poverty with him.

In the end, Mama Zhou says the one single thing that strikes at the heart of the matter again "If you are Zhou Ji Wei's real brother, what kind of life would you want her to have?"
Yao Qi goes home and asks Ji Wei to play the truth and dare game with him. Yao Qi chooses the truth part of the game and tells Ji Wei that he has been unhappy for the last couple month.

Yao Qi goes through all his friends who has sacrificed one way or another to help him with his insurance job. Telling Ji Wei that he is tried of being a burden to his friends instead of the "Big Brother" he has always been, Yao Qi asks Ji Wei to give him back his life.
Ji Wei pleads with Yao Qi that she will do whatever to make him happy again, but Yao Qi reminds her that she promised that if her presence brings him misery than she will leave him even if it hurts her. (Her answer in the beginning of their truth and dare game.)

With tears running down her face, Ji Wei tells Yao Qi she will indeed leave him. Yao Qi and Ji Wei sobs in the respective corners after the break up.
Mama Zhou confesses to Daddy Zhou about Yao Qi's problem. Crying over how curl she was to Yao Qi, Daddy Zhou finally tells Mama Zhou that helping their kids is what being parents are all about. Pooling all their money together, including all of their retirement savings, Mama and Daddy Zhou decides to give $500,000 NT to Yao Qi for his dad's debt.

Mama Zhou "What if when we are old and no one takes care of us?"
Daddy Zhou "Then I'll go with you to beg on the street."
Hearing the door closing behind Yao Qi, Ji Wei races out but can only lean against the door as she pounds against her chest over the heart ache she feels.

Mama Zhou calls Yao Qi to tell him about the money they are giving to him but Yao Qi has already thrown his phone in the trash.

Mama Zhou calls Ji Wei's to ask her where Yao Qi is, but all Ji Wei could do is sob.
Tired of waiting for Mr.Right to show up, Mei Xiu decided to go ahead and shoot her own wedding photo. However, a mysterious man shows up at the photo shoot and Mei Xiu looks at the man with stars in her eyes.

Ji Wei and A Bin laughs over the fact Mei Xiu has finally found love with a man ten years her junior but they are still very happy for her.

I think in two episode ago, Mei Xiu goes with Ji Wei to dinner and there was a waiter that took their order. That's the mystery guy.

A Bin asks Ji Wei if she has forgiven Yao Qi yet?
Ji Wei "There is nothing to forgive. I was angry when I heard the truth from my mom and the fact he wouldn't allow me to "fall in" with him. But he wouldn't be him if he didn't do what he did. So now I am just waiting for myself to finally let it all be in past."

While wondering around their secret wall, Ji Wei finds a "green bean dessert drink" hanging from the tree branch just like Yao Qi always bought for her. With pounding heart Ji Wei turns around to find Yuan Fang standing behind him.

Yuan Fang tells Ji Wei that he was able to find out that Yao Qi always visits the special need grand daughter of one of his debtors on the fifth of every month.

Ji Wei goes to find Yao Qi but Yao Qi has already taken the special needs girl away from that facility.

On the train home, Yuan Fang shows up again "He really does love you, you know. So that makes me scared that I will have to work that much harder for you to fall in love with me."

Ji Wei shows up at Yao Qi's old restaurant and from her conversation with Yao Qi's friends it sounds like she always show up on the 17th of every month and orders the same thing (Sausage wrapped in glutinous rice).

With a shining ring on her finger, Ji Wei takes a bite into her food and in a voice over we hear "I will forgot and live my life normally everyday, but on the 17 of every month I will let me self miss Dai Yao Qi will all my being."

17 is special because in Taiwanese it has the same sound as Yao Qi.
In more voice over, Ji Wei think backs to the story she told in Episode one of the two artists who found true love with each other then decides to part ways. Ji Wei tells the end of that story when two artist will meet each other on some unknown street years later and again their eyes will meet to tell of the joy and the regret between them.
The most senseless story ever told. It always reminds me of a scene in a drama I can't remember now (tell me if you recognize this scene), the hero is sitting with an elderly man while on a self exile from the heroine for her sake. The elderly man pulls out a picture of his deceased wife and say "You think what you are doing is wise, but all I can see is that you are wasting precious time. Your love one will not always be around and one day it will be too late."
Thinking to herself, Ji Wei promises "Dai Yao Qi, One day we will meet again." The scene shows a page in the dictionary "Meeting Again: Maybe 2025"

Thoughts

My first thought after I finished this episode "What?!!!! Seriously?!" Second thought "CRAP! I still have to recap this. Don't make me watch it again."

So first thing first. What the heck is up with the ring? Answer: We don't know. We know is not the ring that Yao Qi bought for Shao Min (the Apple In Your Eye people said so). However, they won't say if it's from Yuan Fang or not.

So did Ji Wei get together with Yuan Fang in the end? Is the ending trying to say Yao Qi will always be her soul mate but she has chosen to marry Yuan Fang instead? The ending obviously doesn't provide an answer, but the director has made the statement that Yuan Fang is Ji Wei's Da Ren Brother.

Da Ren Bother is referring to the drama "In Time With You" where Da Ren is the hero of the story. In Taiwan, Da Ren Brother is a term used to refer to a man who ends up being a girl's (often a girl he likes) best friend but not quite a boyfriend. You know the kind of the guy that a girl can cry to and complain about all the jerks out there but will never actually date him? So if we go with the whole Da Ren concept, then Ji Wei probably didn't get together with Yuan Fang... although the ending for Da Ren in "In Time with You" is that he got the girl at the end.

Anyhow, speculation aside, I have no clue what this show is trying to say about what happens in the end with Ji Wei and Yao Qi. I REALLY dislike this ending. It kinda sours the whole show for me. I really hate it when a show goes all "artistic ending" on me just for "artistic ending" sake.

While I dislike unhappy or even open endings I can be okay with them if it make sense for the characters or fits the story line. However, this ending does neither. I can see Yao Qi disappearing and that does kind of fit his character. BUT giving up and moving on doesn't fit Ji Wei's at all, especially when she knows why Yao Qi did what he did. Here is a girl who would invest over 20 years of her life and even give up her life for Yao Qi, and now she is just willing to sit back or even move on when she knows the guy is still crazy about her?!

The Ji Wei I know from this story would be working night and day to help Yao Qi pay off his dad's debt even if she is not actively looking for him. It would not be hard at all for Ji Wei to find the list of debtors that Yao Qi has to pay back. So why would she just let him struggle all by himself? Plus, it would be totally unlike Yao Qi's personality not to charge right back to her to stop her from paying his debt once he finds out she is paying debtors.

Lastly, why did they even throw Yuan Fang back into the mix at the end? If they really are going to say "hey, Je Wei is moving on with her life and looking else where for love..." then fine have her do that, but not with Yuan Fang. The story has shown clearly that Ji Wei doesn't like Yuan Fang at all, at least not romantically so why would he somehow have a chance with her just because Yao Qi is out of the picture? It's not a question of A or B but if A is out then look there is a whole slew of other guys around. Now, I don't necessary have a problem if Yuan Fang is going to play Da Ren's role in Ji Wei's life... but can Da Ren really be played by someone who kidnapped you once?

All in all, this might just have ruined my Halloween. I know, I know, kinda dramatic but I get like that sometimes when a good story gets ruined. This show really was going to be one of my favorite T-Drama but the ending probably has just made it the T-Drama I don't want to talk about.

  1. No! Isn't there supposed to be 14 episodes? Please say this is not the ending! :'(

  2. I am shocked!!!! I can't believe this is actually the ending. I'm so mad at this ending. I loved this drama, but this ending ruined it all. I felt from previous episodes that Yao Qi had learned that it was okay to be a bit selfish and chase after your happiness, but the Yao Qi of this episode went back to stage 0 of being this sacrificing lonely 'hero'. And Yao Qi, I liked her better when she was this sort of clingy heroine who no matter what would never give up. Ugh, I'm utterly disappointed with how this drama ended. And Yuan Fang... did the directot say he's Ji Wei's Da Ren brother? Are they crazy!??? He kidnapped her once...which I think they completely forgot!!
Can this episode please be a dream??

    1. Oh my GOODNESS!!! I have just watched this a few moments ago and I could not agree with you more!! This episode needs to end up being a really bad nightmare from the crazy script writers (suddenly giving the crazy kidnap guy a second chance of being with you???) and hopefully they will bring out a little extra episode or maybe even sequel one day to prove that Ji Wei and Yao Qi DO finally make it together!!! This is what I am madly hoping!!!

  3. I looked up the drama in wikipidea and it is scheduled to end until November 7th. I don't understand how this is the last episode?

  4. Sadly, I think this is the last episode. At least all the wording from the the show itself seems to be saying that. Mr. Right Wanted is the next show and that one is suppose to air next week. I have seen the Nov7th date around as well, but on the Chinese site for this show, it says the end date is today, Oct 31st.

  5. So...sad. This ending sucks! If they were going to do this they should have stopped in ep 12!

  6. I'm really disappointed with ending too :(

  7. What the fudge. I was really looking forward to watching this when the subs are done. Maybe I'll just watch through the first half of 12 and pretend it ends there. So many otherwise good shows ruin the ending by trying to be clever or meaningful. I hate when writers put the OTP through hell and then keep them apart for some ridiculous reason. How disappointing.

  8. ......wth so disappointing. how can yuan fang be da ren after all that shady shit he put ji wei under....

as disappointing as the production for 'you light up my star'

  9. First and foremost THANK YOU for the recaps. Without these I would have gone insane not knowing what was happening because I was not able to find this show 100% subbed anywhere. Second, I am also incredibly disappointed with the ending. I thought for sure this was going to be one of my top Tdramas, it had all the makings of being a great love story and then just BAM-punch in the gut, slap in the face-BAM. Now I'd like to forget everything after episode 11. Thanks again!

    1. Your welcome! I can't not tell you how tempted I was to just write Episode 13... let's forget it happened and called it good. However, I knew there were people like yourself who was watching without subs so I still recapped it anyway... although you probably could tell I was no where as wordy with the recap portion of this episode compare to the others.

    2. I just finished wathcing ep 12 thanks so much for the recap... I am seriously upset how could yao qi do this? I mean seriously it took them 10 years to be together and had to break two peoples heart and only after almost two years they give up their relationship because of a debt?? and omg this is all the mothers fault if she had just said we'll help you and gave him support he wouldn't have to leave ji wei...and another thing they have loved each other for 20 years I don't think its possible for them to love another person...seriously * sobbing* writers why did you have to do this to us..forget this i am ganna write my own ending and say that the ring on ji wei was given to her by yao qi and that after 2 years they get married the end.

  11. Just heads up that I have a follow up post with a message from the writer talking about the ending. It doesn't explain the ending but it was an interesting read anyway.

  12. Regardless of her justifications for this ending, the writer has screwed BIG TIME!
She could have developed it into a fantastically good round up of the key driving themes in this story: "Zhou Ji Wei is the only one who can make me not be afraid" and her "I have been prepared since age 6 to fall into the hell hole with you".
She could have them soldering on TOGETHER to overcome the great burdens of meeting her mother's demands and repaying his worthless father's debts, taking care of that girl with special needs - working their butts off in multiple jobs, juggling schedules to find precious moments together to love and care for each other; helping out at the restaurant and the buddies helping them in cash and kind, the father and sisters throwing in encouragements and financial assistance and help fight off her mother's complaints, etc.
That would have been the right ending and make this the BEST Taiwan drama ever. Instead, we now have the worst ending and most of us just want to forget about the show because of how ridiculously stupid and senseless this drama has ended.

    1. we should just forget the ending and write our own ending push it so hard into your head that you would think that's how it ended every time you think of this show that's what i plan to do.
I am NOT letting an ending like that ruin a very good tdrama. btw why couldn't yao qi just talk to his mother overseas she is seriously a bad mom for not visiting him once if she had shown up she may have been able to pay for the debt after all yao qi's father was her husband.

      Delete
    2. Ha, it's funny you mentioned Yao Qi's mom. I TOTALLY was thinking she was going to show up to save the day, since judging from the presents she sent Yao Qi years ago she is doing quite well financially.

  13. I don't know what to say ....I'm so mad right now !!!!!!!!!!! i was hoping for a happy ending ... ToT . I think they wanted an "unexpected" ending, but this ending ruined it all.
Plus right now i want to talk with people about this drama but here in the countryside in France nobody care about this ToT ...

  14. I know exactly how you feel. The writer really shot herself in the foot. As some one else has said, for me, the show ended at the first half of episode 12. That is how I want to think of and remember the show. Episode 13 is just the writer's egomaniac trip into oblivion and she crashed and burned as far as I am concerned.

    1. Whos the special need girl?

    2. The special needs girl was the grand daughter of his father's debtor - the old man Yao Qi visited with his grandmother when he was young.

  15. I just finished watching today November the 20th, and I'm so so disappointed and lost for words!!!!!!! How could the writers do this to us??? I literally cried tears for Zhou Ji Wei, I was also heartbroken! Felt as if it happened to me. I don't recommend anyone to watch, you'll just be disappointed!

    1. The writer should watch and learn from the Korean drama My Spring Days - how to write a beautiful end to a beautiful story; instead of the crap that was dumped on us here in this show!!

    2. I ABSOLUTELY feel your pain, Lil Black Girl On A Mission- I was completely the same. I had not really cried at all for the entire running of the series, but when it was nearing the end and we're being left shown a longer-haired Ji Wei staring at a moustache-baring Yao Qi and knowing that they just threw their love away, I wept BUCKETS!!! I will warn ANYone off this drama- it is just not worth investing in the story. It sets itself up to be so SO good and then within a few short minutes just implodes. The script writer's decision-making?? Absolutely Unbelievable!!!

  17. hello~~~ I am from Taiwan and I am just searching the reviews of this drama
and find lots of people feel disappointed with the ending
well, actually, the day this episode broadcast on TV did arouse lots of Taiwanese fans' discussion and argument
but right after that, the script writer (Mag Hsu) wrote a post on her FB

    here's the rough translation:

"When I wrote the last episode,
I knew YOU would definitely scold me
I've confessed in this way at a speech:
Screenwriter is kinda sort of GOD
yet GOD is not that easy to be
    cuz people always say:
GOD, Why do you do this to me?
By the time I finished cutting the last episode to the time before it broadcast on TV
I've always had an impulse all the time -- to rush to the editing room and edit the ending
    but, sorry
at last, I still didn't take action
    because-----
As long as Ji Wei and Yao Qi live on
The story would never come to an end
They are all on their way of editing the ending
In fact, WE are also rewriting OUR ending
    so, Dear Sisters and Brothers
We must live a better and more beautiful life on this road
Let the ones who had ever loved us
smile for us and be proud of us somewhere in the world
This is the last word I want to tell you."

    -----
although I always prefer HE to BE
I can understand the writer 's action
this may not be a good romance story
but it somehow portray a more common situation in real life
    Separation, Lost, Regret...
and after all of this, we keep moving on...
