Surplus Princess Episode 4 Recap

3:40 PM Posted by ninja , 4 comments
What a great episode! Surplus Princess is either finally finding it's footing or I am getting use to it's wacky tone enough to focus on the story.  Either way, there were so many good scenes in this episode that it was really difficult to decide which scene to leave out.

Episode 4

At the end of episode three we ended with Ha Ni in the bath realizing her leg has turned back into her mermaid body. What's worse, Ha Ni think someone might have seen her mermaid body while she was taking a bath. In a panic she calls the witch, who told her anytime her legs touches water, they will turn into mermaid tails. The mermaid tails will only turn back into legs once they are dry. The witch also warns Ha Ni that her most urgent business is to find the person who discovered her secret. The problem is that every one of Ha Ni's roommate looks suspicious to her and she has no lead on who discovered her secret.

Ha Ni's roommate Ji Yong, always on a look out to win Ha Ni's heart offered Ha Ni a glass of water but ends up spilling the water on her legs. In a flash, Ha Ni's legs starts to turn into her mermaid self.

Just when Ha Ni is about to be exposed someone suddenly turns the light off, plunging the room into darkness. In the midst of the chaos and Ha Ni's plea for someone to help her, Ha Ni's roommate Hye Young shows up in front of Ha Ni and said "Can't you be more careful? I can't help you every time you know?"

Turns out that Hye Young was the one who caught Ha Ni during her bath with her mermaid body and even stopped others from entering in. Hye Young's explaination of what Ha Ni is? She thinks Ha Ni is the reincarnation of her precious gold fish that died two years ago. Ha!

Curious about the witch, Hye Young asks Ha Ni to take her to meet him. When she did meet the witch though, the witch threatened to kill her to protect their secret. The witch finally decides to trust Hye Young when Ha Ni assures her that Hye Young will keep their secret. Now that Hye Young and Ha Ni are best buds, Hye Young advises Ha Ni the key to get Shi Kyung to like her is for him to see her a lot. With that in mind, Ha Ni decides to take Shi Kyung some lunch at his company.

The news that JH (the company Shi Kyung and Hyun Myung's ex-girlfriend)is hiring spread through all the job searcher's heart like wild fire. Hyun Myung and his other two roommates decides to try their luck at applying for it. To increase their chance of getting hired, they decides to try and join a prep group geared at entering into JH.

The prep group has three members already. All three members are the cream of the crop, with impeccable back grounds. After the three members interviewed Hyun Myung and his roommates, they decide to choose Hyun Myung to join their group.

Ha Ni sneaks into JH to give Shi Kyung some food in order to make a good impression on him. By chance Ha Ni ends up following Shi Kyung to the changing room.

Ha Ni sneakily follows Shi Kyung and ended up seeing the lovely view of Shi Kyung's backside.

Ha Ni runs away when she thought Shi Kyung might have spotted her. Unluckily, Ha Ni runs right into Jin Ah (Hyun Myung's ex-girlfriend)and ends up being toss out onto the street.

Night Watchman's Journal Episode 1&2 First Impression

1:12 PM Posted by ninja , No comments
My first impression? Where is my Jung Il Woo?!!!  Second impression? See my first impression.

Not to say the set up of the story wasn't done well.  It was, but I spent most of the time hoping Jung Il Woo would just show up. When I finally did get attached to the characters, then it all ends. It didn't help that they tricked me with the preview of episode two showing Jung Il Woo in it.  FYI: He didn't show up until middle of episode 3.

Episode 1

The scene opens with bunch of eunuch and palace maid trying to make sure little Crown Prince Lee Rin doesn't get hurt as he plays tag with bunch of royal children. The prince bumps into another child and a eunuch hastily starts to yell at the child but quickly become quiet when he realize it's another prince. Prince Lee Rin quickly helps the other child pick up his book. Prince Lee Rin is obviously a child with kind heart.

Just as Prince Lee Rin is showing his favorite beetle that his father, the King gave him along with the hand made cage also made by the king the sky darkens. Soon, burning rocks begins to fall from the sky making everyone running for cover.

Soon, Prince Lee Rin is left by himself when his palace guard become possessed and starts to kill each other.  Even his eunuch was trapped by a black smoke.  Running, the prince finally sees the king and tries to go to him, but the black smoke comes again and hoist the prince high up into the air, chocking him.  The distressed king was finally able to catch the prince falling from mid air when his guard used a spell slip to dispel the smoke.

The king meet with his guard who is obviously well versed in dealing with the supernatural side of things. The king is aware of everything but has to pretend that he doesn't believe in supernatural happenings and goes along with his adviser's view that some rebels got into the palace when there was a meteor shower.

The king meets again with his guard and the head of royal treasury who really is the head of the night watchman specializing in dealing with the supernatural side of the nation. The two advises the king that the attack was initiated by a group of dragon god believers who are trying to help the dragon ascend to heaven. If the group achieves their goal, it would mean destruction for their nation. They also inform the king that in order to cure the sick prince who was attacked by the black smoke they would need a special flower from the White Head Mountain. The flower can only blossom with the help of the Holy Woman from the White Head Mountain tribe.

The king immediately declares that he will go to the mountain and ask the tribe for the flower. Umm, the threat of your whole nation going to dust and you decide to ignore it and go off on a quest?

Cucumber Kimichi

10:03 AM Posted by ninja No comments
After watching many Korean family drama I came to be curious about the various cold dishes all Korean family seems to have on hand in their fridge.  This seems to be a good time saving practices, since you could in a pinch just get a bowl of rice and some cold side dishes.

The other day cucumbers were on sale at my local grocery store, so I bought 5 of them and decided to make cucumber kimichi out of them.  It was a nice feeling to have a container of kimichi in my fridge, waiting to accompany at any meal but that feeling only last about three days.  On the third night I was watching Boss & Me (C-drama) with my mom and had a late night craving so my cucumber kimichi got devoured.

The Japanese cucumber, the longer and skinnier than your usual grocery store variety is probably the appropriate cucumber to use for this recipe, but this kind was cheaper and I don't mind the taste difference.

Cut the cucumber in half, length wise.

Use a small spoon to scoop out all the seeds in the middle.  Cut the cucumber in sticks. I cut mine in three sections the long way, then cut it again in three section so you will have long sticks.  Put the cucumber in a colander and sprinkle about 4 tbs of salt on it, stir-around to make sure the salt is well distributed.  Put a bowl underneath the colander to catch all the liquid.  Let the cucumber sit for about 2 hours.

Toss the liquid in the bowl and toss the cucumber with the following ingredients in the bowl: Rice Vinegar (3tbs), Korean hot pepper flakes (2tbs), Sesame Oil 2 tbs, Minced Garlic (2tbs), (optional)hot spicy oil (1tsp).  These amounts are just for reference since it really well very depending on your personal taste and how large your cucumber is  Just remember all the scenes in K-drama where the people are trying out kimichi while making them.  The idea is to add the ingredients and try as you go until it taste good to you.

Put the finished cucumber in a container and leave it alone in the fridge for a day.  It will produce a lot of liquid and that's normal.

Friday Drama Round Ups #3

9:24 AM Posted by ninja No comments
Drama I watched this week and some brief thoughts on them:
To read what CE means check out this post: What does CE mean?

Go, Single Lady (C-Drama)

This show has a rather long set up.  I think it took 10 episodes before I felt the actual story begin.
I am currently on episode 15 and the story is moving pretty fast at this point.  The hero is starting to realize he might have some feeling for the heroine after all.

Go Single Lady First Impression

Hero (J-Drama 2014) Ahh... Memories!!!! I watch the first episode of Kimura Takyua's Hero and boy, it was like stepping into a time machine.  I wouldn't call the show original, because it really was Hero 2 and for that purpose it did an awesome job.

Surplus Princess (K-Drama) It's starting to grow on me! Not totally committed yet, but I am hopeful.
Favorite moment: When Ha Ni's roommate becomes the iron chef to cook her Ramen to win her affection.

Episode 3 Drive By Recap

What Happens to My Family (K-Drama) I loved episode 3 & 4 and can't wait for the battle of wits between one of the main couple next week!

Episode 4 recap

I am on episode 30 right now, and I am loving the fact uncle (the hero's uncle, I don't think they are actually blood related though) is finally ready to face up to his feeling's for the heroine's mom.  The lead couple is still very cute together and the hero is really the poster child of a perfect boyfriend.  (CE-4)

Qi Wei's Bridal Photo

11:10 PM Posted by ninja No comments

Qi Wei hasn't been on my radar for very long.  I have seen her in various second lead roles but haven't seen her as the lead until Love Comes Back.  She was so sassy and pretty in Love Comes Back that I can't wait to see her in some other roles.

August has been a very happy month for Qi Wei. Qi Wei is marrying Lee Seung Hyun on Sept 8th, 2014 at Las Vegas.  I am not very familiar with Lee Seung Hyun so I had to look him up.  Lee Seung Hyun was part of Korean boy band T.A.K.E.  After the group disband due to two members of the group's military service (Lee Seung Hyun is American so he didn't need to do the Korean military service) Lee Seung Hyun stayed in China to keep developing his career.

About June of 2014 is when the news Qi Wei and Lee Seung Hyun being a couple broke.  On August 25, 2014 Lee Seung Hyun surprised Qi Wei at Saipan island and proposed to her in the midst of her friends and families from both sides.  That was really sweet of Lee Seung Hyun to have some many people there to celebrate with them. It also sounds like they had an intimate wedding at the island that day as well.  So I am guessing the Las Vegas one is an additional wedding for more family and friends?  Dang, you have to either fly to an island or Vegas in order to attend this couple's wedding.

Qi Wei looks great in her bridal shots.  I almost wish this could be in some drama.

A side note, the last couple days there has been some speculation that Qi Wei could be pregnant.  That wouldn't be too surprising if that's true, since a lot of celebrity seems to like to wait until having a bun in the oven before they get hitched.  So another big congratulation to the happy couple if that speculation turn out to be true.

What Happens to My Family Episode 4 Recap

Episode 3 was good, but episode 4 is the one that made me go "Gosh, this is great, I can't wait for next week."

Frustrated at being asked to become Sang Kyung's secretary and being mistaken as the president's girlfriend on top of that, Kang Shim gets drunk.  The drunken Kang Shim catches sight of Sang Kyung and chases him down to ask him what does she have to do in order to convince him nothing is between his dad and her.  The next thing Sang Kyung know, Kang Shim has his face squished between her hands and plants a big kiss on him.

Daddy Cha comes out of his shop just in time to see his precious daughter kissing a guy.  Shocked, he charges towards Sang Kyung demanding to know how can he accost Kang Shim like that.

Sang Kyung fib that he doesn't know Kang Shim at all.  Affronted, Sang Kyung tells Daddy Cha that Kang Shim is the one that accosted him.  A some what embarrassed Daddy Cha, apologize to Sang Kyung for Kang Shim.

On a mother and son date, Baek Sul Hee (the president's girlfriend) and her son, Yoon Eun Ho (the one I think Seo Wool saved) discuss their very warped view on marriage.  Sul Hee tells her son that being in love is all good, but he should not marry someone he loves. Hmm... this doesn't bode well for the president.

The next morning Kang Shim finally wakes out from her drunken stupor and wonder how she can possible face Sang Kyung at the office after forcing a kiss on him.

Love At Second Sight Review (C-Drama)

6:24 PM Posted by ninja 2 comments

Love At Second Sight- The unlikely love story between a wedding planner and a break up specialist.  Luo Luo is a top wedding planner who believe in true love and happy ever afters.  Zhe Xi is a break up specialist who believe that there are no love that he can't break up.  When the two meet through competition than Zhe Xi's mother's wedding the most unlikely feeling starts to develop within Zhe Xi.

What I didn't like:
The second female lead- There is such a thing as going too far in setting up an antagonist as an all out crazy scheming person.  I got really tired of the second female lead very fast, since every crazy thing that happens with her you could spot a mile away.

The second half of the story- The first half of the story was zippy and fun, but the second half spiraled into very predictable melo territory. Misunderstanding due to the evil ex-girlfriend, check. Amnesia, check.  The last one especially left me speechless.  Really? Amnesia? Do we really have to go there show? I am not against the use of amnesia in a story when it's done well, but this one was obviously used as a tool for lack of creativity.

Where is my sweet couple's scenes??? The two leads finally gets together and we get 1/5 of an episode of them being a couple before the evil ex comes and spoil the whole thing? The ending was no better.  Nary a kiss in sight.  I re-watched some of the later episodes to write this post and realized that the two leads spend the majority of time apart then together.

What I liked:
The two leads had a fun chemistry when they were bickering with each other.

I enjoyed the journey of Zhe Xi figuring out that he is in love with Luo Luo.

I really wish the show could've kept up it's zippy style the first half promised.  I was curious enough about the ending to be a very causal watcher once it spiraled into predictable melo.  I probably would not recommend this show unless you are willing to watch the first half and just skip the rest of of the show until the ending.

What Happens to My Family Ep3 Recap

12:27 AM Posted by ninja 1 comment
And I am officially in love.  It's been a while since I have seen a family drama that I am interested in almost all the characters.  We are of course only at episode three, so this might be too fast to be proclaiming this show a winner, but it certainly has me hooked right now.

The Cha family has a mini emergency meeting to determine if Seo Wool can continue to stay at their house.  Kang Shim (oldest sister) votes against it, but Daddy Cha gives in to Dal Bong's pleading and decides to allow Seo Wool to stay for one month.

Dal Bong gets into big trouble with his whole family when Seo Wool's stomach upset is mistaken for pregnancy.  With the pregnancy misunderstanding cleared up, Seo Wool happily resume her stay at the big city.

Kang Jae goes to work at the hospital only to find out one of the doctor under him has made a mistake with a patient.  Fuming, he clears out the doctor's rest room and starts yelling at the doctor.  In the mist of the argument, the doctor pushes Kang Jae down on the desk and kisses him.  Surprising, Kang Jae starts to kiss the doctor back as well.  (That surprised me.  Our doctor is not all that cold after all.)

Kang Shim starts an argument with her dad about Seo Wool staying at the house.  Arguing that Daddy Cha is forever doing this exact thing.  Allowing house guest to stay and the temporary stay turns into years, like their aunt.

Her aunt, hearing the argument and deeply hurt that she is only classified as a house guest asks how Kang Shim can ignore her doing all the house work and the effort she put into raising them.  (The animosity about the aunt is intriguing here, since all three kids seems to have various degree of it toward what from all appearance a very nice aunt.)

Things are brewing at Kang Shim's company as the president son Kim Sang Kyung overhears other managers discussing how Kang Shim could easily become the next Mrs. President. Fuming, Sang Kyung charges into his dad's office only to see his dad giving a sparkling ring to Kang Shim.

Bright and early Seo Wool goes around the neighborhood to greet everyone, and in the process gets mistaken as Dal Bong's future bride.

Shocked to hear Dal Bong is still sleeping the day away, Seo Wool goes to wake Dal Bong up by flicking him hard on the forehead. Laughing, Dal Bong's aunt tells Daddy Cha that she really like Seo Wool.  Daddy Cha agrees that Dal Bong seems like a really good girl.

Kang Jae is eating breakfast at the house of the doctor he shared a kiss with.  The doctor asks Kang Jae when he will introduce her to his family, since they've been dating for 3 years now.  Kang Jae tells her marriage is not in his plan and if that is what she wants then she should start looking else where.  (whew, here I thought he was human after all).

Sang Kyung is determined to come up with a plan to get Kang Shim away from his dad.  The brilliant plan he came up with was to get rid of any secretary the company sent him by finding silly problems.  A slew of angry secretaries tell Kang Shim that something is definitely wrong with Sang Kyung.

Sang Kyung tells his dad the only secretary he will accept is Kang Shim.  The president is reluctant to put Kang Shim with Sang Kyung since she is such a great secretary and working for Kang Shim would be a step down.  However, Sang Kyung tells his dad that he will not be assured that nothing is going on between the two unless Kang Shim works with him.  The president talks to Kang Shim about the possibility of going to Sang Kyung, especially since he really needs someone to cure Sang Kyung's stick in the mud personality.

Smugly, Sang Kyung tells Kang Shim to come to work 7:30 sharp. Kang Shim replies that she is not sure if she is going to show up for work or to hand in her resignation.

We meet Kang Shim's company president's girlfriend and her son. The president is planning on proposing to his girlfriend, but is too embarrassed to tell his son before his girlfriend accepts his proposal. From a few hints, it looks like the son is the boy that Seo Woo rescued.

Seo Woo asks Dal Bong who is the boy she actually rescued since he keep saying he is not the one she saved.  Dal Bong asks what Seo Woo is planning to do if she meets the boy.  Seo Woo replies "Marry him, like we promised." A bit taken back (is that a hint of jealousy?) Dal Bong says that if she tells that to the guy, he would think she is crazy.  Her fighting spirit up, Seo Woo propose a bet that if the boy she saved won't ask her to marry him then the money Dal Bong owes her (for getting him out of the pyramid scheme contract) will be taken care of, but if the boy asks her to marry him then Dal Bong has to apologize to her a hundred times.  Dal Bong accepts the bet.

An very frustrated Kang Shim comes home and invites Seo Wool to a drinking match.  By the end of the match both girls are very drunk.

Unsettled about Kang Shim's threat of quitting, Sang Kyung comes to Kang Shim's house and sees her drunk.  Shocked at the complete different image of Kang Shim, Sang Kyung stands by the window with his mouth open.  Kang Shim catches sight of Sang Kyung and charges out to confront him.

Kang Shim asks Sang Kyung what does she have to do in order to convince him that there is nothing going on between her and his dad.  At the same time, Seo Wool is also asking what does it takes for Dal Bong to marry her. Then, both girls came up with the same solution to their quandary...

This happened.  Wa Ha ha, I love Sang Kyung's face!

It's a rare treat when there are at least two relationships in a family drama I am interested in.  Plus so far there is no particularly outlandish annoying character yet.

Out of the two relationship I am most interested in Kang Shim's battle of wits with Sang Kyung, but Seo Wool and Dal Bong's character are also great and their interaction with each other is just so cute.

I am not quite sure where they are going with Kang Jae's character yet, but I am hoping they will come up with something interesting.  He is certainly not a very likable character right now, but obviously the show is setting him up of some humble pie and I would certainly be interested to watch that.
