Friday Drama Round Up #53

12:02 PM Posted by ninja 1 comment
Bubblegum (Korean Drama, New)

Lee Dong Wook's new drama!!! A story about ordinary people (well, ordinary as extremely pretty people can be) who tries to live their life as happy as they could despite the wounds they carry in their heart.

I was a bit worried for the first half of episode one but fortunately the show improved quite a bit by the end of episode two, so I am tentatively hopeful about this one.

Samurai Sensei Episode 1 First Impression

Samurai Sensei Episode 1
Drama: Samurai Sensei (サムライせんせい)
Airs: Fridays
Synopsis: Ryo Nishikido's new drama about a samurai who was transported from the past to the modern time.

Samurai Sensei Episode One Quick Recap
Resigned to his death, our hero Hanpeita Takechi is ready to say goodbye to this world as he aims a knife at his own stomach... until he wakes up to see this strange sign.
Refusing to think deeply about the sightings of cars and the strange people he encountered, Hanpeita assumes that he just arrived at some weird village that has been greatly influenced by the evil western society.
Amazed as he walks around a grocery store, Hanpeita stares at the noodles that was given to him and proceeds to give a long criticism of how terrible it must be...until he puts it in his mouth and exclaims what heavenly food it was.
Hanpeita strange behavior quickly gets him into trouble and he faints as he tries to run away from the police. Rescued by Grandpa Saeki who curiously has no problem figuring out Hanpeita's true identity, Hanpeita is stunned when Grandpa Saeki tells him that 150 years has already passed.

After accepting that there is really no way to get back to his own time, Hanpeita becomes a teacher for a small group of kids thanks to Grandpa Saeki. However, highly suspicious of Hanpeita already, the parents of the students become enraged when they finds him teaching wrestling to their kids. To make matters even worse, two of the students have gone missing after Hanpeita send them out of the class for disobedience.
In the worst case scenario, the two missing kids are kidnapped by a murderer who is about to kill them.

While the villagers are racing around trying to find the kids, a man sitting at a cafe all the sudden stands up in shock when he sees a picture of Hanpeita on the internet.

Thoughts
I have seen Ryo play a variety of roles before but I think this is the first time I have seen him play such a ... um... bizarre role. Hanpeita's character is obviously going through a big adjustment as he struggles to get use to the modern world, but judging by some clues I wonder if he is actually kinda weird anyway.

By the way, the picture above is when Hanpeita wakes up to find himself in Grandpa Saeki's house and the heroine assumed him to be some pervert... which is a reasonable assumption because he is sniffing her bra and asking "What is this? It has some sweet smelling fragrance?"
Samurai Sensei is pretty wacky with a heavy dose of the message that Japanese society has veered off what their ancestor had hoped for them to be. I can't quite put my finger on it, but Samurai Sensei's pacing is kinda off and what's worse the show is failing to catch my interest. That's not to say the show couldn't improve once it find its footing so I might give it another episode ... if it doesn't get lost among all the new shows.

I Have A Love Episode 17-18 Recap

I Have A Love Episode 17
Resigned to the fact that Hae Gang will stick to her demonstration no matter what, Jin Eon brings her an umbrella when it starts to rain. Looking at Hae Gang with those puppy eyes, Jin Eon pitifully asks "If I asks you to have lunch together... you probably would say no right?" Seemingly sure of Hae Gang's refusal, Jin Eon turns to leave but freezes with joy when Hae Gang hesitantly replies "Let's have lunch together."

Friday Drama Round Up #52

12:08 PM Posted by ninja 7 comments
This week was sure filled with new shows! Not so much from K-Dramas but more from the Chinese side. Fortunately, there are actually quite a few that seem pretty promising.
 Good Time (Chinese Drama, New)

I actually like Hu Ge quite a bit, so I was interested in this one right away. A fairly typical C-modern drama about working adults and their love life. Good Time was kinda slow and repetitive for the first two episodes. However, the show got a lot better by episode three so I am going to give it a few more episodes.

I Have A Lover Episode 15-16 Recap

I Have A Lover Episode 15
Still speechless after Jin Eon's sudden tears and embrace, Hae Gang sits in a coffee shop with Jin Eon and assures him that he has mistaken her for his wife.
Snorting at the ridiculousness of the situation, Jin Eon listens as Hae Gang tries to persuade him that he should just forget his ex-wife because if it was her that was what she would've wanted.
A side note: Jin Eon raises his eyebrow with slight surprise when Hae Gang assumed that Seol Ri must've been the one that told him about her amnesia.

My Sunshine the Movie VS the TV Show

3:00 PM Posted by ninja , 3 comments
I have actually meant to write this post for a few months but I am finally getting around to it now. My Sunshine is one of my favorite Chinese drama so I felt the absolute need to check out the movie version of it as well. This post will mostly be a comparison between the TV and movie version since I think most people would be hard pressed to not do so if you have watched the drama already.

5 ji Kara ji Mada (J-Drama, New)
Yampi!!! Okay, fan girl scream done. Yamashita Tomohisa's new drama where he plays a monk romancing a girl he met through a marriage meet. I had no clue monks in Japan could get married! Who say you can't learn things through dramas! Anyhow, despite being a fan of Yampi, I am going to need another episode or two to see if this one is going to make it on my watch list.

I Have A Lover Episode 13-14 Recap

I Have A Lover Episode 13
Using the opportunity to talk to Baek Seok under the guise of a concerned little sister, Seol Ri asks Baek Seok if he has taken the time to dig into Yong Gi's (Hae Gang) past. In a flash back we see that Baek Seok had indeed talked to one of Yong Gi's friend and has known this whole time of the hardship Yong Gi has been through (from losing her fiancee to being an outcast from blowing the whistle on her company) but had falsely come to the conclusion that Yong Gi had lost her baby. Avoiding Seol Ri's question, Baek Seok simply admits that it doesn't matter what Yong Gi's past is.

Still rather shocked after seeing Hae Gang, Jin Eon's friend shows up suddenly and reminds the siblings that their respective other half has disappeared together. Of course Baek Seok is simply puzzled of why Hae Gang is not picking up her phone, but Seol Ri has guessed the truth and is stiff with worry over what Jin Eon could be doing with Hae Gang.

Wanting to give Yan Ze another chance if not just for Ya En's sake, An Xi meets with Yan Ze alone in an effort to persuade him to stop his plan to turn her village into a chemical dumping ground. However, things takes a drastic turn when An Xi refuses to give Yan Ze his cell phone (the phone has all the evidence that could send him to jail) and Yan Ze becomes violent.

Worried about An Xi, You Qian arrives just in time to get in a fight with Yan Ze. Stunned to see Yan Ze holding An Xi as hostage to threaten You Qian, Ya En surprises everyone by grabbing the cell phone from You Qian and runs away. The last one to arrive, Yan Ze ignores our two unconscious leads and rushes to Ya En's side. Ninja Drool #27

Ninja Drool #27
I checked out a Chinese cooking variety TV show called Chef Nic (十二道鋒味) the other day. Chef Nic is not strictly a cooking show but more like one of those celebrity variety show meshed with a lot of cooking. I was personally a bit impatient with the parts where the celebrity guests had to participate in games but I was pretty happy with the cooking parts of the show.
I found this little tidbit of the history especially interesting. In the olden days, the dining establishments will prepare a bunch of boiled eggs on the day of the national test hosted by the emperor. All of the eggs will be cooked through, except one egg. The lucky scholar who gets the soft boiled egg is suppose to pass the test.

Friday Drama Round Up #50
Kiss Me Thai (New)
Surprise! They made another version of Itzaura Na Kiss... so of course I had to check it out. Kiss Me Thai is actually my first Thai drama so it took me a bit to get use to listening to the foreign sounding language. This version definitely detracts quite a bit from the original story. For example, the hero is actually a transferred student that just joined the heroine's class, which is not the case in the comic. Also this particular hero doesn't seem to be quite as cold as the ones in the other versions. Overall the basic structure of the story is still there though.

Moon River Episode 19-20 Recap

Moon River Episode 19
Worried that Liu Bing spent the whole night at work, Xiao Xi rushes to his work with breakfast in hand. Puzzled that no one is at Liu Bing's work, Xiao Xi calls his cell phone and is stunned when Coco causally answers the phone to tell her "Liu Bing is in the shower. Do you want me to get him now or do you want him to call you later?"

Despite being worried about Xiao Xi's reaction when Coco tells him honestly of her conversation with Xiao Xi, Liu Bing ends up choosing work instead of rushing to her side.

Moon River Episode 17-18 Recap

Moon River Episode 17 Recap
As expected, things are not going well for Liu Bing's job search at all since Sha Xing's father has made sure that no one would dare to hire him.

Seemingly undaunted, Liu Bing sweetly asks Xiao Xi to "recharge" him so he would have the energy to keep trying.

I Have A Lover Episode 1-10 Catch Up

I have been pretty excited that I Have A Lover is finally done with setting up the backstory and we can get back to the current time line. I am assuming there are probably people out there like me that gets too impatient to watch the whole 10 episodes of backstory so this is just a post to do a quick summary.

God of Trade Innkeeper 2015 (K-Drama, New)
Checked out the first two episodes of this one and just about sobbed myself dry of tears. Thankfully, the backstory setup goes pretty fast so hopefully the crying inducing scenes will lessen once Jang Hyuk's character grows up.
