Unmei ni Nita Koi Episode 1-3 First Impression

Unmei ni Nita Koi Episode 1-3 First Impression
Japanese Drama: Unmei ni Nita Koi or Destiny Like Love (運命に、似た恋)
Airs: Fridays
Episodes: 8
Leads: Tomoyo Harada & Takumi Saito

A middle aged divorced woman living with a high school aged son, Kasumi Sakurai works hard at her job as an employee at an elite dry cleaning place. Seemingly content with her somewhat ordinary life, Kasumi's only frustration is her own ridiculous behavior of giving money to her ex-husband who had ran off with another woman years ago.
Out on a routine dry cleaning delivery, Kasumi is mildly surprised when a male customer suddenly asks her to sit on a chair he has just finished making. Marveling at the beauty of the chair, Kasumi assumes the man just makes furniture as a hobby without realizing that she is actually meeting a famous upcoming designer named Yuri.
Feeling a sizzling awareness between herself and Yuri almost right from the moment they met, Kasumi tries to ignore the attraction knowing full well that a man so young and successful would just be playing with her feelings for fun.
Unbeknownst to our heroine, she actually shares a cherished past with Yuri and neither has forgotten their promise that they will meet one day.

Ninja's First Impression
Episode 1: What an interesting show. It probably will be a really sweet sticky fatalistic sort of romance...
Episode 2: Umm... what's up with this eerily horror movie feel? I thought this was a romance?
Episode 3: Oh, It is a romance...but boy, the writer sure is trying to tackle a bunch of issues in just eight episodes.
As you can see, I am still having a hard time figuring out what exactly this show is despite the fact that you would think with a name such as "Destiny Like Love" it really should be a full on romance. In a way, Unmei Ni Nita Koi does deliver exactly what it promised. The two leads are tied by their childhood vow and the story revolves around their "fated love" BUT thrown in with it is also a whole host of darker issues that kinda just reminds you from time to time that this is not going to be a pure innocent love.
We are only at episode 3 and already the story had touched on issues such as infidelity, dark jealousy, struggles of those who are poor, completely mess up mental state of artists, stalker like high school crushes and much more at the rate we are going.
Still, as much as I am a bit apprehensive at how dark the story does get at times I do find both leads to be very intriguing characters. The chemistry between the leads are simply amazing. Kudos to the director for being able to create the juxtaposition of a sizzling physical attraction with a dose of first love innocence.

Anyhow, not exactly a soft innocent childhood love I was expecting but strangely, I am completely hooked.

  1. I'm completely smitten with this show. Their chemistry is so off the charts, I think my laptop will melt. And his hair. It turns me into a middle school fan girl.

  2. I haven't enjoyed Saito K in some of his offerings of late, but I think he suits this part well. He always has this debauched touch to his good looks, and it fits. I really hate that President's wife.

You're right. The chemistry of the leads is really amazing.
