I thought about doing a 2016 top ten but quickly realized for someone as indecisive as me it would be next to impossible for me to figure out which great drama I would place above another beloved drama. So, here is a list of 2016 dramas that made a deep impression on me.
Jealousy Incarnate (Korean Drama, August 2016)
Kudos to the brilliant script writer who managed to take all the romance cliches and made them not only hilariously funny but heart warming as well. The awesome and super sexy chemistry between Kong Hyo Jin and Cho Jung Seok also made this one very memorable as well.
One More Happy Ending (Korean Drama, January 2016)
Since this one aired all the way back in the beginning of the year it took me a bit to remember that it was part of the 2016 lineup. While One More Happy Ending wouldn't make it into my top three dramas of the year I thought it was cute with surprisingly amount of heart to worth a mention here.
Another Oh Hae Young (Korean Drama, May 2016)
Definitely one of my favorite drama of 2016. I have a soft spot for ugly duckling stories so it didn't take much at all for me to fall in love with a heroine that makes you cringe and cheer for her at the same time. Both Eric and Seo Hyun Jin usually have great chemistry with their co-stars which of course just meant that they are simply sizzling together.
Happy Home (Korean Family Drama, February 2016)
There is one reason this one left a deep impression on me...
In all seriousness, I really did like Happy Home quite a bit. As K-family drama go it did have its share of annoying characters and the male second lead's story dragged on more than I liked but overall the good parts outweighed the flaws.
W (Korean Drama, July 2016)
I feel like W deserve a place on this list simply for the fact that the premise of the show is every comic reading girl's dream...well, except the messy last half where it turned into a horror story. Still, as much as I feel like W kinda did a bait and switch on me half way through, the first few dreamy episodes were great enough to leave a lasting impression on me.
Just One Smile Is Very Alluring (C-Drama, August 2016)
Overall, 2016 was a pretty decent year for C-drama. I used to find C-city romance a bit hard to follow but either I am getting used to them or they are making better ones now since there were actually quite a few good ones this year.
To be completely honest I am actually not entirely sure why I loved Just One Smile Is Very Alluring so much. The plot was completely predicable and it really was just episode after episode of watching our hero railroading over everyone with his perfect intelligence while looking utterly handsome doing it but still... would it be exposing my shallowness if I say I could probably handle a season 2? (Not that there is one on the horizon. Sorry if I got anyone's hopes up.)
Who knew a detective romance could be so addicting ...at a snail's pace no less. I am still a bit torn on how excited I am about a season 2 but season one was certainly awesome enough that I am going to at least give it a chance.
Dame Na Watashi Ni (Japanese Drama, January 2016)
I tried to follow quite a few J-dramas this year but for some reason Dame Na Watashi Ni was the only one that stuck. This one is your typical J-romance about a 30 year old single woman searching for that "special someone" but despite the predicable plot it was cute enough for me to still remember it even in December.
This hasn't been a good year for T-dramas...in fact it was really kinda slim picking until Behind Your Smile and King of Romance aired. T-dramas has really come a long way and when it wants to it could deliver some solid dramas, so here is to hoping that 2017 would be a much more fruitful year!
Goblin (Korean Drama)
I know, I know. This one is not even finished but come on! It has Gong Yoo AND Lee Dong Wook so I think that single fact make this one an automatic winner in my book.
